About BERcheck & the data

BERcheck turns the official Irish Building Energy Rating register into a plain, useful picture of how efficient homes really are, and what it takes to upgrade them.

Where the data comes from

Every figure is built from the SEAI BER Public Search dataset, published by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. It holds 1,393,758 Building Energy Rating certificates, each recording a home’s rating, energy value, construction era, dwelling type, heating fuel and the physics of its walls, roof and windows.

An important honesty note

A BER certificate is only required when a home is built, sold or rented. So this register is not a perfect sample of every home in Ireland: new builds (which are almost all A-rated) are over-represented, and homes that have never changed hands since 2009 may not appear. That is why you see two peaks, a wave of new A-rated homes and a large older C-to-G stock. We show the median rather than the average, and always show the full distribution, so the picture stays honest.

What BERcheck is not

BERcheck is an information tool. The rating we estimate for “homes like yours” is indicative, drawn from averages for similar homes; it is not an official BER, which only a registered SEAI assessor can issue. Grant amounts are indicative and confirmed at assessment. Nothing here is financial advice.

Who runs it

BERcheck is an independent project of ABL Media Group, an Irish media and data business. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by SEAI. Questions or corrections: use the estimate form and mention it.
