BER rating bands explained
Every Irish home’s Building Energy Rating sits on a scale from A1 (best) to G (worst), measured in kilowatt-hours per square metre per year. The lower the number, the less energy your home needs and the cheaper it is to run.
A10 to 25 kWh/m²/yrNew, near zero-energy. Best possible.A225 to 50 kWh/m²/yrVery high efficiency, typical of new builds.A350 to 75 kWh/m²/yrVery efficient, low running costs.B175 to 100 kWh/m²/yrHighly efficient home.B2100 to 125 kWh/m²/yrEfficient, low heating demand.B3125 to 150 kWh/m²/yrGood efficiency.C1150 to 175 kWh/m²/yrTypical modern standard.C2175 to 200 kWh/m²/yrAverage Irish home.C3200 to 225 kWh/m²/yrRoom to improve.D1225 to 260 kWh/m²/yrBelow average. Upgrades worthwhile.D2260 to 300 kWh/m²/yrPoor efficiency, high bills.E1300 to 340 kWh/m²/yrInefficient, cold and costly.E2340 to 380 kWh/m²/yrVery inefficient.F380 to 450 kWh/m²/yrExtremely inefficient.Gover 450 kWh/m²/yrLeast efficient. Major upgrade needed.
